What a gem of a movie!
Sean Penn was pitch-perfect as Harvey Milk. I can’t exclaim enough about his performance. Just about everything about this movie was pitch-perfect. I say “just about” because, for me, I felt some moments in the film were too “artistic” and contrived; mostly that has to do with the direction and cinematography. Gus Van Sant is a very, very good director. I just find some of his artistic choices distracting (and considering some of the other directors out there, this is a minor problem for Mr Van Sant).
I don’t know much about the historicity of the movie, so I can’t speak on the accuracy, but I can speak about the power of the movie…and it is very powerful. And so eye-opening too. Some times as a person of faith I just hang my head in shame about how in general (keep that phrase in mind) people of faith, especially people of “conviction”, can do some of the most atrocious and despicable things. And you know something, I’m pretty sure at some point in my life, in fact I know that at several points in my life, I am guilty of bigotry (it may not quite as bad as the people in the movie, and I have, and continue to, learn my lessons…hopefully).
I recommend this movie most heartily!
