What a fun little fantasy romp! I have to admit that I had my doubts. Not really in the sense of the story or what not, I love Neil Gaiman and just about everything that he writes, but more in the overall production and feel of the movie.
The production end of things, in my opinion, was very well done and gave the movie a real-life yet fantastic feel to it. When you were on the England side of “the wall” you really felt like you were in England back when. Then, when you went to the other side of “the wall” there was this familiarity yet strangeness that was subtle and magical.
The story itself, I found quite enjoyable. There were elements that were probably better stated in the written version, but all in all it was solid and very well told. The characters, even the supporting ones, were nicely drawn and you didn’t feel that they were two-dimensional. The central characters were superb! I have pretty always loved and enjoyed Claire Danes. Ever since I saw her in Baz Luhrmann’s Romeo & Juliet, I was drawn to her…kinda like Natalie Portman; an actress who, even at a young age, showed remarkable skill and depth. The central male actor is a pretty much no-name guy, Charlie Cox, and he impressively holds his own. It’s not often that you see that…then again, everyone’s gotta start somewhere right? Let’s hope that this gets him a little more proper recognition.
All in all, for you fantasy lovers out there, watch this movie. If you like fun and adventure, watch this movie. Anyone else, don’t. ;p
