Elizabeth: The Golden Age

7/10 (-1)

I really liked the first Elizabeth movie. The direction was subtle and yet distinctive. The acting was wonderful (this movie is where I first really noticed Cate Blanchett) and the actors really grabbed hold of their roles and truly embodied them. The story was good. All in all Elizabeth was a shining example of a good, solid movie.

Elizabeth: The Golden Age is not quite the same. While the story is as good and was very well written and adapted for the screen, the subtleties were missing. The direction was ok, but what I liked in the first Elizabeth movie was not absent but over emphasized in this one. The acting was good, however I found the casting of Clive Owen to be a bit of a mistake. I really like Clive Owen, but I don’t think he fit this role. Sure, he’s charming and rugged and a real man’s man, but there was a depth he didn’t quite achieve that I was expecting, and when you are opposite Cate Blanchett and Geoffrey Rush you got to bring your A-game!

The movie as a whole was enjoyable and worth a rental. However if you haven’t seen the first one, SEE IT! It is easily a 9/10 on my scale.
